After pursuing other interests Paul undertook pupillage with Andrew Mitchell QC, leading to a tenancy in the chambers of Andrew Mitchell QC in London. For some years Paul pursued a varied practice in crime and related areas in London and the Midlands, joining St Philips in 2005. Paul has been instructed in a number of high profile cases, and has been involved in many lengthy serious trials.

Recent Cases:

R v Quayle – acted a junior in this appeal concerning the therapeutic use of cannabis.

R v Hudson – junior for one of the defendants in 3 month murder trial.

R v Self – defence junior in a murder trial stayed because the police had bugged solicitors.

R v Wilmore – representing one of the Defendants in a large drugs conspiracy stayed because the
Police had bugged solicitors.

R v Noddings – defence junior in a rather salacious murder trial in a sleepy English village.

R v Peckham – representing one of the Defendants in an advanced fee fraud.

R v Gallager (Operation Jetski) (Worcester July September 2011) Acted for one of nine defendants charged with conspiracy to rob. Case involved telecoms evidence and insider on the witness protection scheme.

R v Chrzanowski (Lincoln 2011-12) Attempted murders, allegation of trying to rip the heart out of one of victims with his bare hands.

R v Steadmann (Operation Teaser) (Wolverhampton April-July 2012). Acted for the principal Defendant in an allegation of conspiracy to steal.

Corporate and Gross Negligence Manslaughter

Instructions have included successfully acting as junior on behalf of a well-known chain of supermarket alleged to have caused the death of an employee.

Fraud, Business and Financial Crime

Paul has been involved in many large fraud trials over the past twenty years as single advocate, leading junior and lead junior. These have included frauds relating to villas in Spain, import/export fraud, fraudulent trading (particularly asset-stripping), banking, credit card and cheque fraud, and a variety of fraudulent businesses.

Paul is has instructed as leading junior on behalf of one of the defendants in a fraudulent trading trial where the whitewash procedures have been used.

He defended one of a number of defendants in a wide-ranging international advanced fee fraud.

He has represented many defendants charged with offences under the Companies Act and Insolvency Act.

Organised Crime and Terrorism

Paul was junior to the Crown in a long running drugs conspiracy prosecuting the organisers of illegal drugs parties. Represented as junior Peter Williams, prosecuted for the murder of Nottingham jeweller Marion Bates. Other instructions have included representing the alleged transport manager in a people trafficking case, one of a family of ten tried for the torture and murder of another member of the family, a defendant in a conspiracy to supply kilos of class A drugs per week, defendants facing allegations of conspiracy to commit armed robberies and a defendant in a gang land execution.

Restraint and Confiscation

Paul has an exceptional track record in confiscation proceedings. He has been instructed for the confiscation proceedings in many cases where the amounts claimed exceed seven figures.

He successfully represented a defendant before the Administrative Court who was alleged to have seriously breached his restraining order by selling assets and diverting the proceeds.

Serious Sexual Offences

Paul is an accredited rape prosecutor.

He has also defended in many rape cases, and in cases involving sexual offences against young children.
