Simon Ward Crime

A criminal specialist practising principally in the Crown Courts in the Midlands, Simon both prosecutes and defends, most often in serious cases of sexual crimes, drugs and violence. He is a Grade 4 prosecutor and is regularly instructed to conduct cases of considerable sensitivity, for example concerning allegations of sexual abuse against children. He is an approved rape advocate.

Simon has many years of experience conducting trials in all areas of the criminal law. He has developed expertise in cases which involve computer evidence. Consistent with his seniority, he has prosecuted and defended cases ranging from attempted murder to causing death by dangerous driving. Simon has been Instructed to prosecute and defend murders as junior counsel, and in the trial towards the end of 2008, held the junior brief for one of the defendants in the M40 “Hells Angels” murder. More recently he has been instructed to prosecute murders as a leading junior.

Simon was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2009.

  • R v N – Stafford Crown Court – successfully defended member of hospital staff accused of sexual assault on a sedated patient
  • R v I – Warwick then Manchester Crown Court – 6 week defence trial involving Albanian people traffickers
  • R v McIver – Warwick Crown Court – online grooming and rape prosecution, and conviction upheld on appeal

Fraud, Business and Financial Crime

Simon has prosecuted and defended numerous cases involving fraud and dishonesty, ranging from ‘car ringing’ to false accounting. His relevant cases have been varied and include the theft, disguise and re-selling of prestige cars and the dishonest misappropriation by staff in residential homes of funds belonging to clients. Further examples include insider manipulation by bank staff of account details in order to assist co-conspirators conduct fraudulent banking transactions.

Serious Sexual Offences

A Grade 4 prosecutor and approved rape specialist advocate, Simon prosecutes and defends all manner of sexual cases, including child rape and online grooming. He successfully prosecuted one of the first cases of online grooming in Warwickshire in which the defendant pretended to be a female child in order to befriend his victim online, before meeting her and raping her. The conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal. Simon regularly advises in cases of sexual offences at an early stage, and conducts trials involving children and other vulnerable witnesses. Simon is very familiar with the complexities of evidence from computers, which is often encountered in cases where indecent images of children are involved or where suspects and witnesses are alleged to have communicated online. He has experience of conducting trials where a Registered Intermediary has been appointed to assist the complainant.
