Simon Ward

A criminal specialist practising principally in the Crown Courts in the Midlands, Simon both prosecutes and defends, most often in serious cases of sexual crimes, drugs and violence. He is a Grade 4 prosecutor and is regularly instructed to conduct cases of considerable sensitivity, for example concerning allegations of sexual abuse against children. He is an approved rape advocate.

Simon has many years of experience conducting trials in all areas of the criminal law. He has developed expertise in cases which involve computer evidence. Consistent with his seniority, he has prosecuted and defended cases ranging from attempted murder to causing death by dangerous driving. Simon has been Instructed to prosecute and defend murders as junior counsel, and in the trial towards the end of 2008, held the junior brief for one of the defendants in the M40 “Hells Angels” murder. More recently he has been instructed to prosecute murders as a leading junior.

Simon was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2009.

  • R v B – Junior defence brief in the M40 “Hells Angels” murder trial before Treacy J at Birmingham Crown Court in October and November 2008
  • R v N – Stafford Crown Court – successfully defended member of hospital staff accused of sexual assault on a sedated patient
  • R v I – Warwick then Manchester Crown Court – 6 week defence trial involving Albanian people traffickers
  • R v McIver – Warwick Crown Court – online grooming and rape prosecution, and conviction upheld on appeal
