Joe is the Chief Clerk with responsibility for overseeing the clerking and administration operation across the whole of St Philips. He chairs various committees in chambers, including the management team, executive team and the strategy committee whose job it is to identify and proactively adapt to changes in legislation, funding and alternative business structures. In addition his role encompasses business development, practice development, marketing and management.
Joe began his career in the Judicial Appointments Division of the Lord Chancellor’s Department (as was then) where he assisted in appointments to the High Court Bench, Circuit Bench as well as to the ranks of Queen’s Counsel and Recordership.
He started his clerking career in 1998 at a well-known and successful common-law set of chambers in London where he quickly rose to the rank of First Junior/Deputy Senior Clerk. In 2001 Joe made the move to Birmingham to join St Philips Chambers and within six months, and at the age of 25, he was appointed Senior Criminal Clerk where he went on to co-manage the mergers with No.1 Fountain Court in 2002 and No.3 Fountain Court in 2006.
Joe is a member of Birmingham Law Society and sits on their International Committee, who’s responsibility it is to raise the profile of the Birmingham Legal Community across the globe. Joe is also a member of the Institute of Barristers Clerks.
On a personal level, Joe is a doting father to his three young children and likes nothing more than spending what little spare time he has with them. A keen amateur boxer in his teens, Joe continues to box (despite his age!) at ‘White Collar’ level and is Fighting Fit City Gym’s inaugural Heavyweight ‘King of the Ring’ 2011/12; Cruiserweight ‘King of the Ring’ 2012/13 and Light Heavyweight ‘Ring King’ 2013/14 and very happy to be coming down in the weight divisions and not the other way around! Joe also enjoys walking and music of all varieties.
